Principal Engineering Technician is the advanced journey and/or lead specialist level in the Engineering Technician series. Incumbents perform a variety of tasks related to the performance of a sub-professional engineering office, design assistance and drafting work, including assisting professional engineering staff in mechanical, structural, electrical, or instrumentation technical support work.
Positions in this classification function as either (1) leadworkers of assigned staff who perform difficult field or office research and administrative tasks or (2) perform a variety of complex, technical work involving plan checking, map checking, design and drafting assignments similar to those often assigned to beginning level professional engineers. Assignments may also include (1) assisting in the supervision of a program or functional area or (2) interpreting and applying principles and techniques to the resolution of problems.
