A special exhibit of samplers, “A Piece of My Heart,” opens May 3 at the San Bernardino County Museum in Redlands. The exhibit, scheduled to run through July 6 and free with museum admission, focuses on samplers that are part of the permanent textile collections in the museum’s history division.
"Some samplers contain verses like that above, or alphabet and number sequences, and fanciful designs including buildings, animals, flowers, and scenes from the natural world," said Michele Nielsen, the museum’s curator of history. "Others demonstrate sewing skills like darning stitches or other decorative techniques. Many include the name, age, and hometown of the girls who worked them."
Nielsen will lead an informal gallery walk through the exhibit on Friday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. "We'll talk more about samplers and how they reflect important social issues of the past," said Nielsen, "including the role of women in society and family life, education for girls, and even attitudes and traditions associated with events like birth, death, and marriage." The gallery walk is free with museum admission.
