The Contra Costa County Library and Office of the Sheriff are seeking qualified candidates to perform paraprofessional library work and provide various library services to the public in Contra Costa County.

The County Library is recruiting for permanent full-time, permanent part-time, permanent intermittent (on-call substitute), and temporary vacancies. The Library operates 24 community Libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves approximately 900,000 urban, suburban and rural patrons with an annual circulation exceeding 4.7 million. Responsibilities include but are not limited to helping library patrons locate information and use various reference sources; instructing patrons on the use of library resources; assisting at the circulation desk and processing library materials. Other duties include training new employees and student assistants and providing support in other areas of the library.

The Office of the Sheriff has a permanent full-time vacancy assigned in the detention library facilities: Martinez Detention Facility in Martinez, West County Detention Facility in Richmond and the Marsh Creek Detention Facility in Clayton, CA. The position maintains browsing libraries in the detention facilities which allow inmates to obtain direct library services such as locating specific title, authors, or subject areas. Responsibilities include training and supervising inmate workers; sorting, packing and unpacking shipments between library branches; coordinating periodic contests; recording and submitting statistics; preparing book selections, loading into book carts and delivering to inmate housing units. The individual selected for this position must have the ability to establish and maintain interpersonal skills to effectively and tactfully deal and work closely with custody staff and inmates. A permanent job offer is contingent upon the successful completion of a thorough Office of the Sheriff background investigation.
